Numbering

LAWLIFT numbers the headings and paragraphs in your templates automatically. This means that you do not have to insert numbering manually into your text.

Info

The numbering of your LAWLIFT template is done only during preview or document generation.

Otherwise, rules that refer to entire paragraphs or headings would be skipped.

Tip

This also affects references within your template. As long as you are in the document generation, only a code is displayed, because it is not yet clear at which numbering position the element will be located.

This means that when you build a LAWLIFT template, you only specify whether the headings and paragraphs contained in it are to be numbered or not. By structuring your template, you determine the level on which the individual headings and paragraphs are to be located so that you adopt the different styles/numbering you have specified for these levels when exporting to Word.

Tip

For a better understanding of the interaction between LAWLIFT and Word, feel free to take a look at our help on the subject.

Global settings for numbering headings and paragraphs

In the edit mode of a template, you can deactivate the numbering under OPTIONS by checking the box for the entire template. If this checkmark is set, you can select the level from which you want to display the numbering by clicking on the arrow keys that appear.

You can deactivate the numbering of paragraphs globally so that only the headings are numbered. Therefore click on DISABLE NUMBERING and then at DO NOT NUMER PARAGRAPHS.

Tip

You can create a numbered list even if the numbering is disabled globally.

  • Click in the paragraph that is to become a numbered list element.
  • Click on the three dots and on LIST ELEMENT.
  • Repeat for all paragraphs that you want to appear as numbered list items.

For paragraphs that have already been made into list items, an exclamation point will appear instead of the three dots. To turn the list element back into an unnumbered paragraph, click in the paragraph, then click on the exclamation mark, and finally click again on the LIST ELEMENT highlighted in orange.

Local settings for numbering paragraphs

When the numbering is globally activated:

You can specify locally for each heading and for each paragraph whether it should be numbered or not. To get an unnumbered heading or paragraph, click on the heading respectively paragraph, then on the three dots next to RULES and then on DO NOT NUMBER. In the case of headings/paragraphs whose numbering has already been switched off in this manner, an exclamation mark appears instead of the three dots. To reactivate the numbering, click in the paragraph, then on the exclamation mark and on NUMBER.

Attention

Please note that if you turn off the numbering of the heading, this will apply to all paragraphs below it as well.

Numbering with hidden headings

Attention

Please note that hiding headings have an impact on the numbering options.

All headings are hidden

If all headings are hidden in the document, the paragraphs are numbered consecutively.

Tip

The hidden headings are then used to set rules on whole headings or for a better overview of the whole template.

Of course, the numbering can also be switched off via the headings. This could then look like this:

Partially hidden headings

Paragraphs under a hidden heading ("Heading hidden") refer to the (non-hidden) heading above it ("Heading") in terms of numbering.
